"Back to Basics" -- Fundamentals of Collage

Thursdays June 17 - July 15, 6:30--9:00 pm

(no class July 1) $150 (includes some materials)

Become acquainted with various approaches to collage, along with techniques for making collage papers and other materials. Learn fundamentals of abstract composition or brush up on your skills with a series of design exercises exploring shape, color, texture and other elements. The class will also include instruction on making image transfers, embellishments and textured materials to add dimension and interest.

Supply List:

  • Brayer (4" Speedball recommended)
  • Small bottle of Liquitex or Golden Gloss Medium & Varnish1 each #8 and #10 round watercolor brushes
  • Any favorite collage papers or materials
  • Images, text or other items of inspiration



 "Mixed Media Painting & Collage"

Fridays, July 9-30, 1:00--4:00 pm   $175 (includes some materials)

In this four-week class we will combine more traditional painting techniques with collage to produce pieces with texture and depth. Beginning with an underpainting on watercolor paper, see your work develop richness and contrast with the addition of papers, acrylics, inks and other materials. This is also an excellent opportunity to incorporate realistic elements and imagery and further develop unfinished watercolor or acrylic paintings.

Supply List:

  • 1 sheet of 300 lb watercolor paper
  • Assortment of favorite watercolor and/or acrylic paint
  • 3-4 assorted sizes of watercolor or acrylic brushes
  • Any favorite collage papers
  • Any favorite photos or images
  • Brayer


Workshops

"Just Paper"

Saturday, June 12,  10:00--4:00 at Currents Gallery, McMinnville. Please contact Currents at (503) 435-1316 to sign up; see www.currentsgallery.com for more information.

Experiment with multiple methods of coloring and texturing papers for collage. Assemble a glorious assortment of translucent and opaque papers using acrylics, inks, glazes, sprays and other materials.

Supply List:

  • Brayer
  • Assortment of favorite acrylic colors
  • 1 sheet of 140 lb. watercolor paper

"Advanced Collage Techniques"

Saturday, June 26,  10:00 --4:00 pm   $70 (includes some materials)

Spend a day exploring more layering and methods of collaging assorted  dimensional materials. Try working on wood or canvas as supports, with alternative methods of attaching objects and materials.  Stamping, embossing, and layering with gels and mediums are included in the fun.         

Supply List

  • Small bottle of gloss medium & varnish
  • 1 pack each of white and multi-color Spectra Brand Art Tissue (available at Art Media)
  • 1-2 sheets of 140 lb watercolor paper
  • Miscellaneous papers (handmade; found -- sheet music books, etc.; scrapbook)
  • Brayer

"Dissecting Design"

 Saturday, July 10,  10:00 -- 4:00  at Currents Gallery, McMinnville  $75

This will be a full day of design exercises and discussion about composition. We'll examine pieces by various artists to discern the elements of composition and how they have used them. Through the exercises we will break down these elements and explore different strategies to construct successful pieces.

Supply List:

  • 3-4 colors of acrylic paint
  • Brayer
  • Assortment of favorite papers
  • Small bottle of gloss medium & varnish

"Picture This" -- Image Transfers & Photo Alteration

 Saturday, July 17, 10:00 - 4:00   $65 (includes some materials)

Discover multiple methods for making and using image transfers and expand your creative horizons with photo alteration. Transfers are a valuable resource for incorporating representative imagery into your abstract work, and each method provides a unique look  Printed photos are superb starts for true mixed media gems. Mixing and matching techniques with different surfaces makes it all the more fun!

Supply List:

  • Small jar of soft gloss gel
  • 8 or more black and white copies (laser only!) of favorite images (darker and sharp lines are better)
  • 1/2 sheet of 140 lb watercolor paper
  • Assortment of  color photos, any size, if available (e.g., old vacation photos, landscapes)

 

"The Figure in Collage"  

Saturday & Sunday, July 31 & August 1 10:00--4:00   $140

Figure-challenged? Discover ways to portray figures in collage using magazine clippings and other collage papers. No drawing required. With an assortment of images to work from, construct a composition with one or more figures, using shapes and values of papers to define the nuances of form.

Supply List:

  • Brayer
  • Small bottle of Liquitex or Golden brand Gloss Medium  & Varnish
  • 1 sheet of 300 lb watercolor paper
  • A few assorted magazines
  • A few favorite photos or pictures of people (copies ok) 
  • Small bottle of Liquitex or Golden Gloss Medium & Varnish

"Search & Rescue -- Back from the Edge" 

Friday, August 20   12:00 -- 5:00      $45 (includes some materials)

Breathe new life into your unfinished or "failed" collages or paintings. Find ways to use papers, paint and other materials to infuse interest and different compositions to change the look, and feel of your pieces. Adding, subtracting and cropping are among the methods to be explored to create new works of art.

Supply List:

  • Small jar of Liquitex or Golden brand Gloss Medium & Varnish
  • Brayer
  • Old watercolor or acrylic paintings (on paper or canvas  ok)
  • Small assortment of favorite acrylic paints


Open Studio and Individual Instruction -- $35 per 2 hour session

I am available for private or semi-private classes on a mutually convenient weekday schedule. If you need time and space to work on projects, or want help with specific pieces or techniques, please contact me.

+++Note: Additions may be made to the schedule periodically as I am able to schedule guest artists and offer workshops in other locations. Unless otherwise indicated, workshops take place in my studio. Please confirm attendance at workshops at least 3 days prior. Additional information and directions will be sent to you upon sign-up. Visa/MC accepted.

Special Event Workshops


Want to plan an art party for a special occasion? A collage party is a fun and unusual event for groups of up to 10. No art skills are required. Parties may be themed, and will provide everyone with a great piece of original art to take home. Party in my studio or at your place. Also, plan a workshop for your favorite organization. One or two-day workshops can be planned for clubs, social groups, associations, etc., as a recreational activity.
